Meaning comes first
The Prophet ﷺ said, "You will be called on the Day of Resurrection by your names... so give yourselves good names" (Abu Dawud). He personally renamed companions whose names carried a poor meaning.
"Abd" pairs with Allah's names
Names like Abdullah or Abdul Rahman pair "Abd" (servant of) with one of Allah's attributes. Names such as Rahman or Malik are traditionally not used alone, without that prefix.
The seventh-day tradition
